Official statement from MPPUTP (regarding riot in Egypt)

Salam and hi to all

RIOTS

The demonstration started when a teenager burnt himself as a sign of protest due to an action taken by police towards him. And that is how all citizens in Egypt started to urged Hosni Mubarak as the President to resign and step down. The problem might have been settled if Hosni Mubarak follow what the citizen requested. However, Hosni Mubarak refused and ordered polices and army to take charge. He then fired all his cabinet members and stay as the only government man to work on a new election which is one of the factor why the citizens so angry and continued the demonstration.

From MPPUTP side, we are very concerned and sorry to all Malaysian students whom are studying there. For your information, there are 11,319 Malaysian students who are studying in the republic and it consists of 5,184 medical students and 6,135 students who further their studies in variety of Islamic studies.

Some of our students have successfully arrived at Malaysia and some of them went to the neighboring country of Egypt and most of them are still stuck in Egypt. They have to buy the tickets by themselves or through their family in Malaysia and get the serial number. Then, they have to take the flight with using the serial number. Unfortunately, some of them claimed that the serial numbers are not accepted due to the system failure. Fortunately, the airport staff changed it to “first come first serve” basis with condition they have the serial number and recheck at the next station.

Situation from the early of the riot have becoming worse as according to Ummi Medic Mesir said that one of our students were raped. However, the news had been confirmed to be not true. It becoming more difficult to students as the topup prices was hiking and the line was down. Bank were closed and bombed. ATM machine cannot be used and exigent was declared by Hosni Mubarak. To make the situation worse, the airport became overloaded with increasing number of people who want to leave Egypt immediately.

PRAY

MPPUTP hope that all of us can pray for the safety of all Malaysian students there and hope that they can come home safely. Do treat them as our country members, not as political view as raised from certain irresponsible people.

Students at Alex have started and prepared packing and gathering to be taken outside of Egypt. They will be shifted to neighboring country of Egypt trough flight. Let hopes that the riots will not spread to other nearby country.

RELIEF

Most of the universities have announced immediate leave or emergency holiday to their students. CAIRO University have announced 3 months leave, AL-AZHAR University have announced 1 year emergency holiday, while Ain Shams University for 6 months leave. This information was taken from http://krisismesirnasibrakyatkita.blogspot.com which is direct from the office of Yang Berhormat Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) of Malaysia.

The shifting processes are being focused at crucially damaged areas which are Kaherah and Iskandariah. All other area was being told to be prepared for evacuation process.
